“Fake” Sour Dough Bread

Chris LOVES sour dough bread but I haven’t started any of the sour dough starter I need to make the real stuff. I really should get on that but I always forget. While this isn’t the real stuff by any means, it is still a good substitute when you don’t have any starter.


Here are my ingredients.

To start, I whisked together the water, sugar and yeast in the bowl of my stand mixer and let it sit until bubbly.

Next I added the sour cream and vinegar and whisked it all together.

Then added the flour and salt.

Using my dough hook, I mixed it until it formed into a smooth dough. I kneaded it for about 5 minutes before putting it in a greased and covered bowl to rise for about 45 minutes.

After it had finished rising I shaped it into a loaf and placed it in a greased pan to rise for another 15 to 20 minutes, while the oven heated up to 375 degrees.

I baked it for about 25 minutes, removed it from the oven/pan and sliced it up still warm for dinner!

“Fake” Sour Dough Bread


  • 2/3 cup water
  • 2 1/4 tsp. yeast
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • 2 tbsp.white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp.salt
  • 3 cups flour


  1. In bowl of stand mixer, whisk together water yeast and salt.
  2. Allow to stand about 5 minutes, until bubbly.
  3. Add sour cream and vinegar and whisk to combine.
  4. Add flour and salt.
  5. Using dough attachment, mix until smooth dough forms.
  6. Knead 5 minutes.
  7. Place dough in greased bowl and allow to rise for about 45 minutes.
  8. Punch dough down and shape into a loaf.
  9. All to rise an additional 15 – 20 minutes.
  10. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  11. Bake bread for about 25 minutes, until browned and cooked through.
