Blue Jay – Repurposed Wooden Platter Makeover

I have no Internet today, for reasons unbeknownst to me, so Kim has saved my ability to post by agreeing to copy and paste my post into our blog for me!

Yesterday I decided to finally finish one of the plotters I bought at the thrift store for $2. I thought I would try my hand at painting some blue jays. They didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped but they still didn’t turn out so bad.

I had already base painted the platter black, so the first thing I needed to do was draw a pattern on the platter of how I wanted my platter to look.

Once the pattern was drawn on the platter, I was able to start to base paint the actual Blue Jays!

When they were dry I started adding in all the details… feathers and shading and such.

After I was done with the blue jays, I needed some background.

I decided to paint some branches and leaves. I’m not very good at branches for some reason (yet), so I did those first and used the leaves to hide the really bad spots lol!

I let that dry too. Have I mentioned I hate waiting for paint to dry? 😕 And no, I still didn’t try the hair dryer as Chris suggested, I never think of it until it’s too late.

Once again, I chose to speckle. I love the way something looks after being speckled for some reason? I just use watered down paint and an old toothbrush to speckle.

(I water the paint down, rub the toothbrush in it and then run my finger over the bristles to splatter the paint)

Now all it needed was a few coats of my favourite sealer!

And that is my first attempt at blue jays on my $2 thrift store wooden platter!

  3. Looks great! I’m so happy I found this! I just did an up-cycle project with a Blue Jay platter I found at Thrift shop which I used for a hanging bird feeder/bath and you just gave me the inspiration to try painting a platter – I love Blue Jays. I have a feeling I will go through a lot of platters practicing but will be fun to try! I added a link on blog so viewers can come see your beautiful project.
